This change also increases the amount of the <a href=\"https:\/\/edenred.pt\/en\/news\/employee-benefits\/meal-allowance-everything-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">meal allowance<\/a> that is exempt from taxation. Find out what will change!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meal allowance rises to \u20ac5.20 for civil service workers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ordinance no. 280\/2022 of November 18th updates the value of the meal allowance granted to public sector workers, which <strong>increases from \u20ac4.77\/day to \u20ac5.20\/day<\/strong>, with retroactive effect from October 1, 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This increase also raises the <strong>amount exempt from taxation<\/strong>, which continues to depend on the format in which the allowance is granted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If paid in <strong>cash<\/strong>, the exempt amount becomes \u20ac5.20\/day;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If it is paid by <strong>voucher or card<\/strong>, the exempt amount becomes <strong>\u20ac8.32\/day <\/strong>(until now it was \u20ac7.63\/day).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For companies that give their employees <strong>up to \u20ac8.32\/day in vouchers or cards<\/strong>, the tax framework is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Total TSU exemption for the company;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Total exemption from IRS and TSU for the employee.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This change opens up the possibility for companies to <strong>increase their employees&#8217; liquidity through the meal allowance <\/strong>without this resulting in an increase in the tax burden.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Note<\/strong>: in December 2024, the maximum amount exempt from card taxation will be \u20ac10.20\/day.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The government&#8217;s negotiations with some civil service unions have resulted in an agreement to increase the meal allowance.
