But it&#8217;s essential to be aware of the aspects that influence both amounts, not only when accepting a job, but also as a matter of <a href=\"https:\/\/edenred.pt\/en\/news\/savings\/5-personal-finance-courses-to-learn-how-to-manage-your-money-better\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">financial literacy<\/a>. After all, we&#8217;re talking about your monthly salary and your budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is gross salary?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The gross salary is the total amount paid by the company to the employee <strong>before taxes, deductions or withholdings are applied<\/strong>. Typically, it is the highest figure on your payslip. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-konomista.pt\/salario-bruto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gross salary<\/a> can be made up of components such as the employee&#8217;s basic pay, any commissions or bonuses, vacation and Christmas bonuses, other allowances (e.g. sick pay), vacation pay, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Various deductions can be made from the gross salary, the most common of which are <a href=\"https:\/\/edenred.pt\/en\/news\/savings\/what-kind-of-taxes-are-levied-in-portugal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Social Security deductions and IRS withholding tax<\/a>. In the case of IRS, <a href=\"https:\/\/edenred.pt\/en\/work\/what-criteria-define-what-you-pay-into-the-irs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the amount deducted depends on various factors<\/a> such as the amount of the gross salary itself, the worker&#8217;s marital status, the number of dependents, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is net salary?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The net salary is the <strong>final amount after the respective taxes and deductions have been applied<\/strong>. This is the amount actually received by the worker. By checking the details of your payslip, you can better understand the difference between your gross and net salary.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sum of the net salary also includes any <strong>extra-wage benefits received by the employee which are exempt from deductions\/contributions<\/strong>. This is the case, for example, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/edenred.pt\/en\/news\/employee-benefits\/meal-card-allowance-advantages-for-companies-and-employees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">meal allowance<\/a>, which is exempt from IRS and TSU up to a maximum of \u20ac9.60\/day in meal cards or up to a maximum of \u20ac6.00\/day in cash.
