And that consumption comes at a cost, not only to our wallets, but also to the environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This time of year is typically marked by <strong>very high levels of waste<\/strong>. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/quercus.pt\/2021\/03\/03\/este-natal-de-um-presente-ao-ambiente\/\">Quercus<\/a>, the amount of waste produced at Christmas 2020 was 24% higher than the rest of the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As consumers, we should be aware of the environmental impact this festive season can have and adopt <strong>more environmentally friendly consumption habits and actions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So here are some tips you can put into practice this Christmas!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-foreground-color has-text-color\">1 &#8211; Gifts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Favor <strong>quality over quantity<\/strong>, opting for more durable gifts;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buy gifts at antique fairs or <strong>second-hand<\/strong> stores, for example;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offer <strong>digital gifts<\/strong>, such as eBooks, digital subscriptions to newspapers and magazines or streaming platforms;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look for products from <strong>sustainable<\/strong> and ethical <strong>brands<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Replace physical gifts with <strong>experiences<\/strong> (such as theater or concert tickets, museum admissions, massages, etc);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reuse <strong>wrapping paper, bags and bows from previous years<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get creative and use <strong>newspaper or fabric scraps<\/strong> to wrap the gifts instead of the typical wrapping paper;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid using <strong>labels<\/strong> to identify the recipients of gifts;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Try not to buy <strong>excessively packaged products<\/strong>.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-foreground-color has-text-color\">2 &#8211; Decorations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use the decorations from <strong>previous years<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get the family involved and <strong>make your<\/strong> <strong>own decorations<\/strong> with logs, pine cones, moss or cinnamon sticks, for example;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduce <strong>energy consumption<\/strong> and avoid having the lights on for too long (only turn them on when you&#8217;re at home and off at night);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look for <strong>more environmentally friendly light bulbs<\/strong>, such as LED bulbs for indoors and solar bulbs for outdoors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-foreground-color has-text-color\">3 &#8211; Food<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Plan meals in advance and make a <strong>shopping list<\/strong> adapted to the number of people to prevent waste (especially of perishable products);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only buy the <strong>food you<\/strong> really <strong>need<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduce your <strong>use of packaging<\/strong> by taking your own reusable bags shopping;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Store<\/strong> all food and ingredients <strong>correctly<\/strong> to prevent them from spoiling;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage guests to take <strong>leftovers<\/strong> to eat the next day;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take a look at the leftovers and see what can be frozen and what can be reused in <a href=\"https:\/\/toogoodtogo.pt\/pt\/blog\/guia-natal-zero-desperdicio\">new recipes<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you get the chance, <strong>compost organic waste<\/strong> such as fruit and vegetable peelings, old bread, tea bags and so on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And don&#8217;t forget: in the case of packaging and materials that can&#8217;t be kept for the following year &#8211; aluminum packaging, plastic or glass bottles, cardboard boxes, among others &#8211; <strong>separate them so that they can be recycled<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you adopt any of these habits at home during the Christmas season?
