But retaining them isn&#8217;t exactly any easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gone are the days when people dedicated their entire working lives to a single company. Nowadays, workers no longer feel the need to stay in a job they&#8217;re not happy with. Especially if they have <strong>prospects of easily moving on<\/strong> to another job.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several studies have shown that <a href=\"https:\/\/edenred.pt\/en\/news\/human-resources\/turnover-what-it-is-and-main-causes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an employee leaving<\/a> can cost the company up to a third of their annual salary (not only because of the loss of productivity, but also because of the consequent recruitment costs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s why keeping <strong>employees satisfied, involved, motivated and productive<\/strong> should be a priority for companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-foreground-color has-text-color\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-foreground-color\">Why do employees leave?<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although they may leave for reasons unrelated to the company and their work, most of the time the reason is likely to be one of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Low\/unadjusted salary;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More attractive opportunities in other companies;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unattractive or non-existent benefits\/incentives;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overwork;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of recognition and appreciation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The need for a better work-life balance;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of opportunities for career progression and\/or professional training;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Incompatibility with the boss\/management;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dissatisfaction or lack of identification with the company culture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-foreground-color\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-foreground-color\">Why is talent retention important?<\/mark><\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>People are the source of innovation and growth <\/strong>in your company. But this is only true if they are satisfied. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Motivated employees work harder, get more involved in problems and solving them, help their colleagues more&#8230; on the other hand, if they are dissatisfied and even open to new professional challenges, they become less involved and productive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why <strong>developing an<\/strong> <strong>employee engagement and retention strategy<\/strong> is essential: because it improves performance, decreases friction, reduces turnover and, ultimately, contributes to the company&#8217;s growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-foreground-color\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-foreground-color\">8 areas of action to retain talent<\/mark><\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1 &#8211; Onboarding and orientation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Having a <strong>solid onboarding program<\/strong> is the first step in promoting retention. Even if the employee has just joined, the initial support offered from day one can define their entire future experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2 &#8211; Compensation and employee benefits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter how satisfied they are with their tasks, no matter how good their relationship is with their colleagues and boss, at the end of the day employees need to feel that they are being <strong>fairly rewarded for their work<\/strong>. So <strong>put your employees&#8217; well-being first<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Provide a health plan, encourage physical activity (by paying for gyms, yoga classes, etc.), develop time management and stress management workshops, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5 &#8211; Continuous feedback<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Talking regularly and more informally with team members, rather than just doing an annual performance review, is a good way to keep employees more committed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s crucial to provide regular feedback on the employee&#8217;s work, but also to <strong>make<\/strong> <strong>them feel heard<\/strong> and ask for their own feedback: on the company&#8217;s development goals, any discomfort or displeasure, suggestions for improvement or any other topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6 &#8211; Training and professional development opportunities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Give your employees the opportunity to identify areas for growth and encourage them to <strong>develop these skills<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many leaders believe that investing in their employees&#8217; professional development means preparing them to be better at their next job if they leave the company. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/edenred.pt\/en\/news\/human-resources\/employee-training-an-investment-not-a-cost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investing in the skills of human capital<\/a> bears immediate fruit for the business in terms of productivity and innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7 &#8211; Recognition and awards<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Feeling that their work and commitment are not valued can lead employees to look for another professional challenge.
