In April 2026, Portugal implemented the deposit and refund system for drinks packaging, known as the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/volta.com.pt\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/volta.com.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Volta system<\/a>&#8220;, the aim of which is to give <strong>plastic bottles and cans a new lease of life<\/strong>. <br\/><br\/>This system allows consumers to return packaging to <a href=\"https:\/\/volta.com.pt\/onde-devolver\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/volta.com.pt\/onde-devolver\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pontos Volta<\/a> and recover the deposit paid at the time of purchase, encouraging recycling and promoting more responsible consumption.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does the &#8220;Volta&#8221; system work?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every time you buy a covered drink (identified with the &#8220;V&#8221; symbol in the Volta system), the consumer pays an <strong>additional deposit of 0.10\u20ac per container<\/strong>. This amount is returned when the empty container is handed in at an authorized point. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Refunds can be made via:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Voucher <\/strong>(convertible into cash or discount);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Loyalty card<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Donation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Packages can be returned at different points, regardless of where they were bought. However, if the consumer opts for a discount voucher, its use may depend on the rules of the establishment where it is issued. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The impact on retail<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For food retailers, the <strong>&#8220;Volta&#8221; system<\/strong> implies new responsibilities, but also new opportunities.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The establishments are now:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-light-background-color has-background\">\n<li><strong>Charge the deposit of \u20ac0.10<\/strong>, duly itemized on the invoice;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Accept returns<\/strong> (where applicable) and refund the customer;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Adapting billing systems<\/strong> and operational processes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, joining the system can:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-light-background-color has-background\">\n<li><strong>Increase the flow of customers<\/strong> returning to return packaging;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Generate additional purchases<\/strong> at the time of return;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reinforcing the positioning of the business <\/strong>as a more sustainable option.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What about restaurants?
