The social benefit that served as the “genesis” for what we know today as the food allowance became highly relevant in the United Kingdom in the 1950s, says the CEO of Edenred Portugal, Filipa Martins. In the then post-war scenario, this type of benefit sought to establish a minimum quality of life and well-being for workers, guaranteeing a daily meal, which in turn improved worker productivity, she explains.
The labor market is different today, but the context in which we live continues to present challenges, such as inflation and a reduction in purchasing power. “It is precisely in this context that this type of benefit becomes relevant,” explains Filipa Martins, who was interviewed on JE Talks, broadcast by Jornal Económico. Edenred is one of the companies in Portugal that provides this type of extra-salary benefits that companies add to employees’ salaries. The trend, according to Filipa Martins, is for these benefits to be increasingly comprehensive and also to become customizable, according to the needs of the employees and the policies developed by the organizations.
