6 good questions about the company to ask at a job interview

16 de June, 2023

During a job interview, it’s common for the people interviewing the candidates to make room for them to ask questions about the company or the job.

Some candidates tend to say they don’t have any questions. However, by doing so, they are missing an excellent opportunity to: show interest in the organization; demonstrate that they have researched and prepared for the interview; and to understand whether or not the vacancy is suited to their expectations.

Asking a few pertinent questions can give recruiters a good impression and make you stand out from the rest of the candidates. Here are six good questions to ask at a job interview:

  • The company;
  • Organizational culture;
  • The vacancy in question;
  • The team and the working environment.

1 – How would you describe the organization’s culture?

Organizational culture is a very important aspect, as not only must the candidate “fit in” with the company, but the company also needs to meet the expectations of the professional.

Ask this question to find out about the company’s deep-rooted values, working methods, activities, etc.

2 – Why is this position open?

Are you applying for a new position? If it’s not a new position, has your predecessor been promoted? Or has he or she left the company?

Understanding why the position is open can help you get an idea of the company’s dynamics and what kind of career progression opportunities there might be.

3 – What skills are needed or preferred?

Although job advertisements can list the skills valued in the job, asking the recruiter directly will give you a more concrete idea. For example, imagine that the position in question requires direct contact with the client, but you don’t expect that.

By asking this question, you’ll be able to see not only whether you’re qualified for the job, but also whether you’re actually interested in it.

4 – What is the company’s policy on remote working?

Remote working has become quite common in recent years and many organizations offer employees the possibility of adopting a hybrid or remote work regime. If this aspect is important to you – for some professionals it has even become decisive – then it is essential to clarify the company’s policy.

If you already know from the outset that you are applying for a 100% remote position, you could, for example, ask how the company engages remote workers.

5 – How would you describe the team I will be working with?

It’s also important to find out a bit more about the team you’ll be joining if you’re selected. How many people are there and what is their structure, is the working environment good, what challenges do they face, what are their main strengths, etc.

In this way, you can anticipate to some extent what integration and relationships with teammates will be like.

6 – When will a decision be made and/or what are the next steps?

This question will help you know what to expect when it comes to feedback on the recruitment process. Will you have to do more interviews? Does the company have more or less urgency to close the process and choose a candidate?

This information will also be useful for aligning your expectations with those of the company.

Do you ever ask yourself any of these questions when you have a job interview? As we’ve said, asking these questions can help you prove your worth and, at the same time, find out whether or not the opportunity in question matches what you’re looking for.

So, at your next job interview, keep these questions in mind, choose the ones that are most relevant to you and adapt them to the reality of the company and the job in question.
